Peppa Pig was right!

So, with all my current focus on getting prepped to begin my training proper for the Fred Whitton in June I’ve kind of fallen out of love with running.

It’s always been my staple, something I can rely on, fall back on, enjoy…bit like an old friend, you don’t always talk but when you do it’s straight back into easy company.

With one eye on after ‘the Fred’ and getting back to triathlons I want to keep my toe in, (no pun intended), so a few weeks ago I hauled myself around my local 5k route, grumbling all the way…I was less inclined than ever to run again.

However, my wife – being always right, just in case she reads this – suggested I just go out and forget about running a distance / time / route…just go out and run. Don’t look at the watch, ignore the strava segments, headphones out, and just run.

Being the extreme person that I am I took this one step further and thought ‘why not take it up a notch, slip on the trail shoes and run over the local heathland’. The weather has been pretty bad recently so there will be plenty of puddles, mud and general mess to take my mind off of things…

10k, and a lot of mud later, I came home energised.

The morale of this little post…it’s great to follow the training plans, get stuck in with data, heart rate zones and the like but never forget the activity at its base level. Sometimes it’s just best to listen to the birds, run till you’re tired, then run some more…and <queue annoying Peppa Pig voice> jump in muddle puddles!

What keeps you going?
